Baramulla: November 27, 2006. Bashir Tantray, a prominent Christian worker and GCIC Coordinator in Kashmir, was killed on 21st November 2006 in his hometown of Mamoosa in Baramulla District at 10:30 am, at a bus stop in front of his parent`s home. He received three bullets in a daring daylight killing by two motorcycle borne youths, suspected to be Islamic militants. Bashir had been the recipient of death threats even earlier. He leaves his wife , daughters Shabnam (18) and Shakeena (14) and sons Adil (11) and Ajas (16). The slain social worker was an engineer, employed in the Power department of the State government, and resident of Srinagar. He was in Mamoosa to visit his aged father who was seriously ill. He was well respected in his village. He moved to Srinagar in 2003, where he was engaged in serving the cause of the poor victims of violence in the Valley. His involvement in the management of a home for orphaned children, to whom he was like the fathers they had lost, was well known. This had made him the target of militants, who had issued several threats to his life, despite his peaceful, committed work for the welfare of the poor, needy and victimsed in society.
GCIC calls for a CBI investigation in to the cause of his death and the circumstances surrounding the last rites accorded to the body of Bashir Tantray – he was buried according to Islamic rites in an unseemly hurry, denying even his four school-age children, who were studying in other cities – an opportunity to see his body. This is totally unwarranted and unacceptable, as it was public knowledge that he had been a Christian for almost two decades. By allowing this outrage to be perpetrated, the government of Kashmir and the State police lays itself open to the charge of dereliction of duty and dishonouring the memory of this humble, loving and cheerful man who was known for his service in the cause of society. GCIC demands justice for the family of Bashir Tantray.
