UPI. Indonesian police are on high alert for bomb attacks by Islamic extremists during the Christmas holidays, Jakarta`s police chief said Friday. Police Chief Firman Gani said extremists may be plotting revenge attacks using fresh tactics after police killed terrorist leader Azahari Husin last month, The Australian reported. Information found at Azahari`s hideout in the East Java resort town of Batu suggested that attacks were being planned for the Christmas and New Year`s holidays. Azahari`s accomplice and fellow leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah terror group, Noordin Top, is still at large. Gani warned the public to be on the alert for small bombs, possibly carried in backpacks or even disguised as gifts. On Christmas Eve in 2000, 19 people died in bomb attacks that targeted 29 churches and clergy.
