Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan William express concern on blasphemy laws in Pakistan.

Islamabad. November 23, 2005. In a meeting with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz here today the archbishop of Canterbury expressed gave concern on blasphemy laws in Pakistan and termed Sangla Hill church attacks misuse of legislation by majority community

His Excellency, Dr. Rowan urged Pakistan administration to repeal blasphemy laws to ensure harmony in Muslim dominated society. Ex- Federal Minister Col. (Rtd) S. K Tressler was also present in delegation of His Excellency visiting Prime Minister. It's on record that S. K Tressler never raised voice against blasphemy laws during his tenure as minister in government. Mushtaq Victor and Akram Masih both members of National assembly of Pakistan and loyal to ruling PML were also included in delegation who also have not dared to discuss blasphemy laws on floor of house. The Bishops of Rawalpindi and Islamabad were also in said delegation of His Excellency but voice of Dr. Rowan William failed to gain weight as his major representative in Pakistan Bishop Alexander Malik always adopted double standards on blasphemy laws. Bishop Alexander Malik was among those Bishops who welcomed Sharia laws in Pakistan in Jurist Conference in Lahore. The Statement issued by APP added "Dr. Rowan Williams appreciated the steps taken by Pakistan to safeguard the rights of minorities and said they acknowledged the commitment of the government to the promotion of interfaith harmony" The government press release said "Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Wednesday said Pakistan was a moderate and enlightened country and there was complete interfaith harmony among the people of different religions. Talking to Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams and members of his delegation, the Prime Minister said Islam was a religion of peace and tolerance and rejected extremism" The strong issue raised by his Excellency Dr. Rowan William on blasphemy laws seemed week due his delegation's strong ties with government. The issue of Sangla Hill and blasphemy laws may have not drawn due attention in government circles but its voice of Christians of Pakistan that His Excellency shall order clergy in Pakistan to promote harmony among them and to end disputes on Bishops elections and properties.
