ISLAMABAD: Joint Action Committee and country wide Non Government Organizations (NGOs) Thursday staged protest demonstration in Islamabad and strongly condemned President Pervez Musharraf remarks to Washington Post against women saying "Women here in Pakistan got rape to secure Canadian Visa to spend luxurious lives there". Large number of women participated in the demonstration, they marched from China Chowk to Parade Avenue. They were carrying banners and placards inscribed with anti-Musharraf slogans. Speakers in their addresses to the demonstration, highly condemned President Musharraf derogatory statements against women in the United States. They believed the military government should accept the responsibility that violence against women in its tenure had escalated. Government has completely failed in curbing such incidents and to provide protection to women, they added. They were of the view that government could not mislead the people by giving examples from other countries regarding violence against women and nor it could legitimize it in its own country on the basis of these examples. They said criminal minded people existed in the national institutions particularly in police, which backed criminals. "We are not only raising voice against the violence inflicted upon women but also to get them their due rights in the society, they said, adding it is legitimate right of all the social organizations to define a proper role for this struggle. They said "We are warning government to desist from adopting strategy to crush NGOs and take such step which should give strength to these institutions trying to fight for rights of women, they said. They also demanded of the government to immediately extinguish discriminatory laws like Hudood Ordinance etc against women in the country.
