ISLAMABAD: September 23, 2005. Treasury and opposition minority members of National Assembly have protested in National Assembly Thursday over the kidnapping of girls belonging to minorities and after wards their embracing of Islam. They alleged that the minority girls were being enforced to embrace Islam. Answering the call attention notice by the minority members, State Minister for Interior, Dr. Shahzad Waseem told the house that a kidnapping case of a girl, named Sapna from Islamabad was registered on 14th of September but the girl in her written statement said that she had embraced Islam on her own will and had married with a Muslim boy. She also gave the same statement in the court and the court the dismissed the case after her statement. He further said to change the religion or to get married was one's personal matter and government was unable to interfere in personal matters. On this occasion, Devdas of MQM said Sapna was of 17 years old and according to traditions of Hinduism, a Hindu girl cannot be married until she reached at the age of 20 years. He said Sapna wanted to come back her home but she was unable due to pressure by Muslims. A treasury member, Gayan Singh said the kidnapping of Sapna was a serious issue and the accused should be imprisoned. He declared it a conspiracy against minorities. Krishan Bheil of Muslim League (N) said, such kind of incidents was in practice in country generally and in Sindh particularly. He said the rights of minorities in the country were being exploited. Such kind of practice should be stopped, he said. Ramesh Lal of Peoples Party also condemned such kind of incidents and demanded from the government to take necessary measures in this regard. Speaker National Assembly, Chaudhry Amir Hussain asked State Minister Shahzad Waseem to take steps.
