A water war has ensued between two provinces, the most populous Punjab and most productive Sindh provinces, over six canals Punjab wants to build. Any mishandling may spell Pakistan's demise.

A Sindhi barrister and scholar has made an appeal to the governors of Sindh and Punjab to resolve the ongoing water dispute to save the federation of Pakistan from imminent doom.

“Not every federation is worth saving when it becomes a tyrant, fascist state, sometimes you need to move on and save your province,” Barrister Mustafa Mahesar wrote on Facebook Wednesday

Three days earlier, Mahesar made a presentation to Sindh governor Kamran Tessori and Punjab governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan at the Sindh Governor’s House. Mahesar said he was asked by Tessori, who is his client, to make the presentation.

The governorships in Pakistan are largely ceremonial positions as most of the power lies in the hands of the elected chief executives called the chief ministers and the top bureaucrat called the chief secretaries. But it is an open secret that pakistan military is the real power in the country so in actual reality the corps commander wield utmost authority and no chief minister can e posted without their blessing.

However, the governor’s are considered to be symbos of the Pakistan federation that was hastily cobbled together by the british before the left India f]divided in august 1947.

Mahesar who has sympathises for both the separatist ideas and also the Pakistan People’s Party was the additional advocate general but was said to have been outsmarted by Murtaza Wahab. He then flip-flopped and became associated with Pakistan Tehrik Insaf alongside a noted Syed politician from Sindh, Syed Ghous Ali Shah, in fall 2021.

However, Khan was ousted from power by the Pakistan military for refusing to toe the American C.I.A. line on Ukraine. Pakistan generals are known to be dollar-hungry.

Like Mahesar, other pro-Sindh lawyers speaking out against the canals in Punjab include Shahab Usto and Jawaid Qazi.

One of Sindh’s most beloved young social, environmental and political activists Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Junior— the rightful heir to the political dynasty — has also come out strongly against the six canals on Indus river by the Punjabi rulers.

Bhutto’s father was allegedly killed by the Pakistani Deep State with a nod from President Ali Zardari.
