Pope sees German bishop who quit amid abuse charge

Vatican City: July 1, 2010. (AP) Pope Benedict XVI has met with a German bishop who resigned, and then tried to rescind his resignation, amid accusations of physical abuse, alcoholism and sexual harassment.

The Vatican said Bishop Walter Mixa met with the pontiff in a private audience Thursday. The audience was scheduled last month amid conflicting statements from Mixa. He had offered to resign April 22 amid abuse accusations; the pope accepted the resignation May 8. But last month, Mixa told German media he had written to the pope seeking to repeal the resignation, saying he was pressured to quit by other clerics. Eventually he apologized for his conduct and agreed to stand by the resignation. The Vatican has said Mixa's resignation was not up for discussion.
