Vatican City: February 23, 2010. (AHN) - Pope Benedict XVI announced over the weekend the canonization Oct. 17 of six people as saints. Included in the roster is Brother Andre Bessette, who will be Quebec's first saint.

Brother Andre was declared venerable by the Catholic Church in 1978 and blessed in 1982. He is known for ministering to the needs of the sick and the poor in Montreal. Brother Andre will be the first saint from the religious order Congregation of the Holy Cross. He joined the order in 1874, first as a door keeper and a barber at a Montreal school operated by the order. It was there that he became known for his healing ministry, by rubbing oil on the wounds and sick limbs of people, who became well. The oil was burned under a statue of Saint Joseph., to whom Brother Andre is a devotee. He founded the St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal, which receives two million visitors yearly. Brother Andre died in the city in 1937 at 91. Aside from Brother Andre, the five others to be canonized as saints are: •Polish preacher and confessor Stanislaw Soltys Kazimierczyck from the Canons Regulars of the Lateran, •Spanish nun and founder of the Daughters of Jesus order Juana Josefa Cipitria Barriola, •Italian founder of the Catechetical Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus order Giulia Salzano, •Italian Poor Clare member Camilla Battista Varano and Australian nun and •founder of the Sisters of Sr. Joseph of the Sacred Heart order Mary MacKillop.
