14th anniversary of attack on Christian village Shanti Nagar by Muslim mob observed

Shanti Nagar, Punjab: February 6, 2010. (Naseer John reports for PCP) Hundreds of Christians gathered in Salvation Army Church in Shanti Nagar to mark 14th anniversary of attack on this village.

The prayers were offered that Lord saved their lives in violence against innocent Christians. Pastor Hisqeel Sarosh led prayers. njsarosh Pastor Arshad Nazami of Salvation Army, Pastor Abdal Masih of UGA Church, Saimon Sahahbaz of Assembliez of God, Pastor Peter Joh of Yahawa Nasi Church and Pastor Peter were present with their congregations in joint meeting. On February 6, 1997, thousands of Islamic protesters descended on the village with placards stating: "Kill the Christians because they are Blasphemers towards the Holy Quran and Holy Prophet." In the village of Shanti Nagar, 785 houses were destroyed, four churches were burned, and 2,500 Christian forced to flee. The mob violence, in which incendiary devices were used like village Bahinwala, Korian and Gojra. Through this meeting message was delivered to children that they shall not forget their past that what was happened in this village. The Shanti Nagar victims organized hunger strike in front of Punjab Assembly building Lahore for compensation of lost of property and demand of repeal of blasphemy law in 1997. It was remembered in today’s meeting they were not awarded any compensation nor blasphemy law is repealed after 14 years. In this meeting, participants praised God that he saved them in that burning fire and thanked to all Christian brothers and sisters who helped them in that tough time by providing food and shelter. The gathering also condemned killing of Shazia Bashir and demanded justice for teenage Christian girl.
