LAHORE: November 13, 2008. Over 3,000 Sikh pilgrims from India are participating in events commemorating the 540th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak at Nankana Sahib in Pakistan this year.

Celebrations are from Nov 11 to 13 with the main religious event being at Gurdwara Janamsthan in Nankana Sahib on Nov 13. About 25,000 pilgrims from across the world, including over 3,000 from India, are participating in events commemorating the special occasion. Around 1,200 Sikh pilgrims have already arrived from the U.S., Britain, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Afghanistan, Singapore, Thailand and Germany. Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion, was born in 1469 at Talwandi, now called Nankana Sahib. The Indian pilgrims will visit several holy places, including Sacha Sauda Gurdwara, Kartarpur Sahib, Rohri Sahib and Panja Sahib Gurdwara. They will stay at Hassan Abdal on Nov 15 and 16 and at Dera Sahib Gurdwara in Lahore from Nov 17 to 20 and will leave for India on Nov 20. This year’s ‘Nagar Kirtan’ or religious procession in Nankana Sahib will be taken out in a specially designed air-conditioned bus, donated by Lucky Dhillon, a Sikh from Britain. Free eye check-ups by Sikh doctors from around the world will also be arranged in camps set up at Nankana Sahib. Police have drawn up a foolproof security cover for the three-day celebrations at Nankana Sahib. Closed circuit cameras have been installed in and around the Gurdwara. Electronic walk-through gates and police check posts have been set up at strategic points. (PTI)
