Conspiracy to make Christian Political parties inactive in Islamic Republic of Pakistan. By Nazir S Bhatti
In all democratic country people make their political parties to enter in system to safe guard their rights and ensure due share power in state. Therefore, Christians have also organized political movements and groups in Pakistan.
Pakistan also adopted a constitution in 1973 which declared it Islamic Republic of Pakistan with Section 2 in Preamble under Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who was chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party. The Republic of Pakistan under constitution of 1952 and 1956 was changed it as document under Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
It was first event to change status of minorities in Islamic Republic of Pakistan when Pakistan Resolution of 1940 was made Preamble of Constitution but Separate Election system for minorities was snatched in name of equality.
In Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan seats for minorities and women were reserved in parliament which should be allocated to Muslim political parties with proportional to their wining seats in parliament to nominate 10 Minorities seats and 10 women seats in parliament.
The famous democrat who studied in west, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was such a pessimistic leader who was not ready to give voting right to women and minorities that they may elect their representation in parliament with their votes.
Moreover, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto nationalized School, Colleges and Hospitals of Christians and turn them to be 3rd class citizens of state in 1973 constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan which rights they enjoyed in Republic of Pakistan Constitutions of 1952 and 1956.
But unfortunate military ruler Zia-ul-Haq restored Separate Electorate of minorities in 1977 and minorities peracted one vote election for their representatives in parliament in 1985 national general elections on ward.
I must mention role of Christian political party name Pakistan Masihi League in history of Pakistan which split in two faction on Election System for minorities. Joshwah Fazil Din and Emmanuel Sazar led one Faction named Azad Pakistan Masihi League and launched campaign for Separate Electorate for minorities. Hoshwa Fazl Din was speaker of Punjab Assembly during Pakistan Movement during British rule of India and prominent Christian leader.
When party of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto came in power in 2008 in Pakistan, in pretext to restoration of original shape of 1973 Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan presented 17th Amendment in constitution to restore Joint Electorate for minorities. This 17th Amendment raised Muslim Women seats from 10 to 60 but minority seats remained 10 as it were in 1973 Constitution.
The Pakistan Christian Congress was founded in 1986 and registered with Election Commission of Pakistan and took part in national General Elections of 1988 and 1998. There became many more Christian political parties in this period of time.
But national General Election conducted in 2013 after 17th Amendment the Muslim political parties in parliament empowered to select individuals on 10 reserved seats for minorities they selected persons of their own choice as on recommendation of Clergy or rich Christians or those who were close to Muslim leadership of parties in parliament.
It was first step to eliminate true leadership of minorities which damaged role of Christian political parties in Pakistan.
The Muslim of Pakistan have experienced rising unity among Christian, Hindus and other minorities which they disliked and took it as threat.
