HYDERABAD: November 20, 2017. (By Abbas Kassar) Deploring government’s indifference to child rights by giving no importance to world children day which was being celebrate across whole world on 20th November, child rights movement, a network of 85 organisations has demanded from government to notify world children day and celebrate the day officially each year. Child Rights Movement Sindh along with civil society has launched weekly campaign and have asked Sindh government to improve its attitude and behavior towards atrocities against children by better planning with holding ceremonies in govt and private school to create awareness on child rights. These views were expressed by Kashif Bajeer, Mustafa Baloch, Abbas Khoso, Dr. Ashothama, Zahid Thebo, Shaukat Srewal, Khalid Babar, Zaman Jamali and Amir while addressing a news conference at press club here Monday. They observed that unfortunately in Pakistan we are ruled under feudal society and there will never come change until and in presence of Feudal mindset parliament. The rights activists put up following demand:
There were more than 6 million children out of schools. Government should provide free education to children of 5 to 16 giving them books, dresses, shoes and bags. They also demanded to reopen thousands of closed schools with new furniture, drinking water, electricity and toilet facilities. They demanded to implement law which bans child marriages so to end age old custom; to set up child protection units in all 29 districts of Sindh with allocation of Rs.200 million by ensuring to avoid embezzlement. Last year only Rs. 50 million were used while remaining amount of Rs.150 million was lapsed due to lack of interest by authorities. Government has declared district Jamshoro as free of child labour, we demand to frame strategy to implement same, they said and added to allocate annual budget for human rights cells. The leaders of social welfare and human rights organizations also asked to allocate budget for lawyers to provide free legal aid children prisons under Juvenile Panel.
They demanded to set up remand homes in whole province for underage children.
They expressed dismay on inaction of state in carrying out survey of child labor number of which according to 1996 was 3.3 million though unofficial estimates indicate number to more than 60 million. The survey be stepped up to ascertain correct figure so a policy be framed to eradicate menace of child labour from country. They asked all subject with reference to human right be made part of studies at all academies including schools and colleges. This step will help children to know their rights.
