Paris: January 17, 2017. A conference of world leaders was held in Paris on Sunday with efforts aimed at seeking a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
USA Today reports that more than 70 diplomats from countries around the world met at the conference to “restate their commitment to the two-state solution.”
Representatives from Palestine and Israel, the two countries concerned, were not present, however.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was expected to attend, but instead postponed his visit to France and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to attend upon principle.
Netanyahu said the meeting was “rigged” and that things would be different under President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.
Others at the conference condemned the President-elect’s proposal to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
France's Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said that doing so would have “very serious consequences.”
"When you are president of the United States, you cannot take such a stubborn and such a unilateral view on this issue," Ayrault continued. "You have to try to create the conditions for peace."
Hundreds of people gathered outside the conference in support of Israel.
"We are here today to express our objection to the Paris Middle East conference, which we consider an anti-Israeli tribunal, similar to the negative decisions adopted by" the United Nations, Francis Kalifat, who heads a Jewish advocacy group in France, told The Jerusalem Post.
