New Delhi: December 22, 2016. (PCP) The report on Dalit Christians recently promulgated in the capital by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) is far from reality and merely public relations exercise. Many Christian activists have raised question over the content and recommendations given in the report entitled ‘Policy of Dalit Empowerment in the Catholic Church in India’.
According to national coordinator of North Indian Christians Organisation (NICO) Joseph Anthony- Gathia though this policy report claims to create “inclusive “Christian community, past experiences suggest that it will divide the church in India on caste lines.
No doubt church runs excellent educational institutions and hospitals but the report makes false claim that the church has been playing an important role in empowering Dalits as the main beneficiaries are not Dalits and advasis, but rich and powerful belonging to upper strata of Indian society.
Commenting on the 44 page report, president of Poor Christian Liberation Movement (PCLM) R.L. Francis categorically stated that ‘it is old wine in new bottles’. The Christian rights activists feels that the report is ”misleading” as it gives general data on the deprivation of Scheduled Castes people in India while cleverly shifting the blame on the Government of India. The Church in India neglects Dalit Christians in giving them job and admission reservation in their own institutions such as schools and hospitals.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI)’ report mentions Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar several times to confuse larger Hindu Dalit community and reflects lack of confidence among Bishops in Jesus Christ as saviour.
