Chandigarh: August 27, 2016. (PCP) The Department of History, Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector 26, Chandigarh, organized a National Seminar on “Continuity and Change: Socio-Cultural Changes in the Punjab from the Beginning of Eighteenth Century to Mid-Nineteenth Century”, with an objective to look into the hitherto unexplored areas of the socio-cultural history of Punjab during these years.
The Chief Guest for the day was Prof. Harmohinder Singh Bedi , Member Language Committee, HRD Ministry, Govt. of India, New Delhi. A recipient of many prestigious awards, Prof. Bedi has been honored by the President of India for his contribution to Hindi Literature.
The Guest of Honor for the occasion was Prof. Veena Sachdeva from the Dept. of History, PU, and Chandigarh. The Introductory note for the Inaugural Session was delivered by Prof. Surinder Kaur from the Dept. of History of the College. The Keynote address for the Seminar was given by Prof. Amarjit Singh from the Dept. of History, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, who focused on the characteristics of the Sikh Religion, as laid down by the British Historiographers. The Principal, Dr.(Mrs.) Charanjeet Kaur Sohi formally welcomed the distinguished Guests and Speakers for the day.
The Vote Of Thanks for the Inaugural Session was given by S. Gurdev Singh Brar (IAS Retd.), President, Sikh Educational Society, Chandigarh.
Around 45 delegates from different universities and colleges viz. Punjab University, Chandigarh; Punjabi University, Patiala; GNDU Amritsar and Raja Man Singh Tomar Music and Art University, Gwalior (M.P), presented papers on and around the main theme of the seminar.
The Valedictory address was delivered by Prof. Sukhmani Bal Riar, Chairperson, Dept. of History, PU, Chd. The Vote Of Thanks for this session was given by Col. (Retd.) S. Jasmer Singh Bala, Secretary, Sikh Educational Society, Chandigarh.
