Karachi: June 20, 2016. (PCP) “In response of Pakistan Hindu Council’s plea, an immediate action is taken by the Sanghar Police against the shopkeeper in Tando Adam selling “Om” shoes that had the potential to inflame religious sentiments of Hindu community across the country and on international level as well.” This was revealed by Patron-in-chief of Pakistan Hindu Council and Member of National Assembly Dr. Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, while talking to a Hindu delegation, led by Engineer Hotchand Karmani.
“The incident of OM shoes has raised a new wave of peaceful activism by all stakeholders of civil society across the country who not only condemn the act of selling such controversial shoes but also express solidarity with the Pakistani Hindu Community,” said Engineer Hotchand Karmani, adding that the Hindu community is thankful to the Patron in Chief of Pakistan Hindu Council (PHC), Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani for highlighting this issue and bringing it to the media for high ups attentions. Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also took notice of press statement issued by Pakistan Hindu Council about alleged use of Hindu holy symbol on shoes being sold in Tando Adam area of Sindh, and termed as “Unacceptable”.
“We are thankful to the Sindh Police for registering FIR no.124/2016 u/s 295A PPC against the accused shopkeeper Jahanzab s/o Shukat Ali Khaskhili,” Dr. Ramesh Vankwani further said. The shopkeeper was arrested and the shoes in question have also been confiscated. The Police officials have found that the shoes were actually purchased from "Naeem Footwear", based in Moti Bazar, Lahore, and in this regard Punjab Police is also being approached for taking action against the manufacturer of the shoes which is situated in Punjab. Dr. Ramesh added.
Dr. Ramesh Kumar said that it is un-ethical and highly immoral to insult any religion either it is of a minority or majority. “The state must play the proactive role for punishing the culprits under the blasphemy laws”, he demanded, while requesting Prime Minister of Pakistan to take strict action against such disrespectful crime. He was gratified for the trust that his community members showed on him and assured them that he will not take a peaceful sit until solid action against such awful crime is not taken.
