Lahore: May 25, 2016. (PCP) In connection with its Yom-e-Tasees (Foundation Day), Rwadari Tehreek held a Seminar on 24th May 2016 at Lahore Press Club on “Prospects of Peace in the current environment of Hatred, Extremism and Terrorism”. The participants of the seminar included people from different religions and walks of life.
The seminar was chaired by Mr. Samson Salamat, Chairman of Rwadari Tehreek and was addressed by prominent political, religious and social personalities including Mian Imran Masoon (Secretary Information PML-Q), Mr. Mubeen-u-Din Qazi Advocate (Pak Sarzmeen Party), Ms. Sadia Sohail (MPA PTI), Pastor Emmanuel Khokhar (Vicar General, Diocese of Raiwind- Church of Pakistan), Pandit Bhaghat Lal Khokhar (Pandit of Balmik Temple of Lahore), Mr. Abdullah Malik (President of Rwadari Tehreek), Syed Waqar Hussain Naqvi (Chairman Carwan-e-Safiran-e-Aman).
The speakers and the participants of the seminar expressed their deep concerns over the intolerance, extremism and violence prevailing in the society and considered it a serious threat to the social fabric of Pakistan. Moreover, they criticized the federal and the provincial governments for not doing enough to counter the situation and as a result people are left in an unsafe and insecure atmosphere which is surrounded by hateful, extremist and violent mindset.
In his opening remarks Chairman of Rwadari Tehreek Mr. Samson Salamat appealed the people of Pakistan to exercise the respect of all types of diversity on the basis of the principle of “live and let live” and respect every person’s faith, culture, language and ethnicity.
Mr. Samson Salamat while expressing his concerns over the current situation of the country said that “our people, especially the children have been deprived of their right to recreation, social gatherings, games, education and even they do their prayers under the shadow of guns and therefore are generally not safe anywhere and living a life of threat and terror. It seems that the future of our children is at stake because of all those elements who are carrying out terrorist activities and those who are supporting and facilitating these inhumane acts”. “Enough is Enough’ and we call upon the serious attention of the Government, state apparatus, the political parties and all other stake-holders to make short term and long term policy and strategy to counter the culture of hatred, extremism and violence in the name of religion and sect. Merely lip-service cannot reverse the worst ever situation and we demand practical steps”
Mr. Abdullah Malik, the President of Rwadari Tehreek said that “the policy of denial is never a solution and therefore the government and the other stake-holders must accept the realities and concrete measures should be taken to ensure the safety and security of the citizens”.
The participants and the speakers of the Seminar unanimously made following demands for a peaceful Pakistan and to counter the atmosphere of hatred, extremism and terrorism:
The narrative of equality, non-discrimination and respect of diversity - every person’s faith, culture, language and ethnicity should be owned and promoted as an official narrative. The constitutional and policy level reforms should be made to make it happen and there should be zero tolerance for all those elements and mindset which acts against this narrative of peaceful co-existence. Government, media, civil society and other stake-holders should initiate awareness campaigns to promote “Rwadari” (pluralism & respect of diversity, religious tolerance) amongst the people, especially among the youth.
All those laws which are being misused to instigate people for violence in the society should be revisited and reformed.
The syllabus of the educational institutions needs to be thoroughly checked and the material which spreads hate on religious, sectarian or any other basis should be eliminated from the curriculum. There is a dire need to include the kind of material in the syllabus which promotes love and respect for humanity on the basis of non-discrimination. Moreover the access of the elements with hateful, extremist and violent mindset to the educational institutions should be fully stopped to save our young generation.
Immediate and stern action should be taken against the terrorists and militant outfits wherever they exist without any recognition of good or bad. Their hideouts and Training Centers should be identified and eliminated where they are training youth for terrorist activities. The financing of the terrorist groups should be checked strictly and stopped and all those individuals who are supporting the militants and terrorists openly or secretly should be exposed and held accountable.
A very comprehensive border security plan should be formulated to control the foreign terrorists for entering in Pakistan and using our soil for terrorist activities.
The ban on hate speech should be implemented in letter and spirit and all those found in spreading hate speech through print or electronic media or through loud speakers should be apprehended.
