Scotland: December 24, 2015. (PCP) A glimpse of happiness was seen on the faces of young people who survived torture, conflict and persecution when Global Minorities Alliance (GMA) celebrated joys of Christmas and distributed gift boxes with children surviving torture. The event was organised by Freedom from Torture, a UK based organisation during a Christmas party on 23 of December, 2015 in Glasgow Scotland.
Members of Global Minorities Alliance distributed gift boxes to children to share the sense of community, celebration and cohesion during the festive season. The gifts were distributed to children from around the world including countries like Syria, Turkey, Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia, who now make Glasgow their home. Leaving your own country to find safety in another place is not easy; fleeing traumatic experiences can leave deep psychological scars.
Norma McKinnon, Freedom from Torture Scotland Manager said: "Today we welcomed Global Minorities Alliance to join survivors of torture, from all over the world, at our Christmas party for children who attend our Centre. Global Minorities Alliance reached out to show how they care for children who are survivors of torture, distributing gifts at our Glasgow Centre. The generosity of Global Minorities Alliance put a welcome smile on many faces today, and the care shown to torture survivors today will be remembered by them for a long time to come” said Ms McKinnon
One of the recipients of #GMAGiftBox4Kids who has survived torture spoke on behalf of all the children and young people, welcoming Global Minorities Alliance as our 'honourable guests' before thanking GMA and Freedom From Torture for helping survivors 'out of the dark and into the light'.
“At this time of year, we must spare a thought for those who are less fortunate than ourselves. The GMA are doing just that by distributing a little festive cheer to those facing Christmas in a strange city. Their gift boxes will hopefully put a smile on the faces of the many children who'll receive them and make them feel welcome in their new home town said Shona French, Joint session Clerk of Glasgow Cathedral.
‘Right to life is the fundamental need of every human being, which is unfortunately denied to human beings who are subject to degrading treatment, violence, persecution and torture. Christmas is the time of joy, togetherness and celebration which we share with friends and families today that have undergone unimaginable torture in a bid to bring hope and smiles back on these faces’ said Manassi Bernard, the Chairperson of Global Minorities Alliance.
