Islamabad: (PPF) On January 24, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued a public advisory urging users to remain alert to the presence and circulation of illegal content on digital platforms. The authority stated that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, the dissemination of unlawful material cannot be justified under this principle.

In its statement, the PTA emphasised that content involving blasphemy or material deemed disrespectful towards religions or sacred personalities constitutes a punishable offence. The authority also noted that hate speech and propaganda targeting national institutions fall within the scope of actions that may result in legal consequences.

According to the advisory, the circulation of obscene or immoral content, as well as the spread of fake news, is considered a criminal offence. The PTA reiterated that such violations will be addressed in accordance with applicable laws.

The authority encouraged users to exercise caution online and to report any unlawful content encountered on digital platform
