Strength from the Ashes: Restoring Dignity to a Devastated Family. Report by Juliet Chowdhry and Hannah Chowdhry
Pakistan: A Christian family in Raiwind lost three loved ones when monsoon rains caused their fragile home to collapse.
Left homeless and grieving, they sought temporary shelter while BACA covered funeral costs and pledged to rebuild their house.
Despite heavy rain delays, BACA constructed a strong, elevated, and fully furnished new home with two rooms, a kitchen, and a veranda.
The family has now returned with gratitude, finding safety, dignity, and hope restored after unimaginable tragedy.
In July, devastating monsoon rains brought tragedy to a Christian family in Raiwind when their fragile home collapsed under the pressure of relentless downpour. The cracked structure—already weakened by years of wear—gave way, killing three beloved family members: 8-year-old Meerab Aslam, her grandmother Nasreen Bibi (60), and great-grandfather Bashir Masih (100).
The grief was immeasurable. With the collapse of the home, Aslam Masih, his wife, two children, and two unmarried sisters were left not only mourning but also homeless and destitute. With no resources and nowhere to shelter, the family temporarily moved into the small home of Aslam’s brother-in-law. (Read more here)
BACA Steps In Immediately
BACA representatives attended the funeral, covering all burial expenses to ease the family’s sudden financial burden. Witnessing the extent of the destruction, BACA immediately committed to rebuilding the family’s home from the ground up.
Construction began on 6th August, but heavy monsoon rains once again caused delays. After structural assessment, BACA instructed the contractor to fully demolish the remaining weakened walls and rebuild using:
Strong concrete foundations
A secure reinforced roof
An elevated structure to prevent future water seepage
This ensured that the new home would not only replace what was lost but also protect the family for years to come.
A New Beginning After Heartbreaking Loss
After spending three months living with relatives, Aslam Masih and his family moved into their newly constructed home in the second week of October. The house—completed and furnished in the first week of October—now consists of:
Two secure rooms
A varanda
A functional kitchen
One room now shelters Aslam, his wife, and their children, while the second room provides dignified, private space for his two unmarried sisters.
Aslam’s family finally resting in the safety of their newly rebuilt home
With deep emotion, Aslam shared his gratitude:
“After the collapse of the house and the tragic death of my daughter, mother, and grandfather, I was left without a home.”
“I am thankful to BACA for constructing a house for my family and children.”
“I wish my mother was alive to see this beautiful home.”
Juliet Chowdhry, Trustee of the British Asian Christian Association:
“In the midst of overwhelming tragedy, we wanted this family to know they are not forgotten. This new home is a foundation of hope—proof that compassion can rebuild what disaster has taken.”

This rebuilt home delivered safety, dignity, and hope—but hundreds of vulnerable Christian families continue living in unsafe, crumbling structures across Pakistan.
