Kashmir Rejects Terrorism, Propaganda and External Interference. By Farooq Ganderbali
The latest remarks by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where he again referred to Kashmir and called for dialogue, are disappointing and unnecessary. India has rejected such third-party intervention and reiterated its position that Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part of India.
The people of Jammu & Kashmir have their own aspirations and priorities. They want peace, development, quality healthcare, education, sports, tourism, employment, entrepreneurship and a secure future for their children. Kashmir should not be repeatedly reduced to a political slogan in international forums.
For the people of Jammu & Kashmir, the journey ahead is about building a peaceful and prosperous society. The region has made significant progress in areas including healthcare, education, sports, tourism and infrastructure, while democratic participation remains an important part of public life.
Pakistan-sponsored terrorism has caused immense suffering
For decades, terrorism and violence have inflicted enormous suffering on Jammu & Kashmir. They have taken innocent lives, damaged the economy, disrupted tourism and affected the social and cultural fabric of the region.
The 2025 Pahalgam terrorist attack remains a painful reminder. Twenty-six people were killed in the attack. The National Investigation Agency subsequently chargesheeted Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba/The Resistance Front and other accused, describing a Pakistan-based conspiracy.
The Pahalgam attack was not only an attack on innocent tourists; it also struck at Kashmir's tourism economy, the livelihoods connected with it and the confidence of people who want Kashmir to be known for peace and hospitality rather than terrorism.
Why the silence on Pakistan-occupied areas?
If Türkiye is genuinely concerned about the welfare of Kashmiris, it should also pay attention to the grievances reported from Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir.
Recent reporting has documented protests over political and economic grievances, restrictions on communications and deadly clashes between protesters and security forces. The exact death toll remains disputed, with authorities and protest groups giving different accounts.
This raises an important question: Why repeatedly speak about Jammu & Kashmir while ignoring the concerns of people living under Pakistan's occupation?
The people of Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan also deserve development, basic services, political rights, accountability and dignity. Their concerns should not disappear from international attention simply because they do not fit a particular geopolitical narrative.
Kashmir's young generation wants a different future
Kashmir's rich heritage of Sufism, Rishi traditions, brotherhood, coexistence and cultural pluralism cannot be allowed to become a casualty of terrorism and radicalisation.
Our young people want classrooms, sports grounds, universities, businesses, tourism and innovation. They want opportunities—not violence. They want progress—not propaganda.
Kashmiris do not need political lectures from Ankara or Islamabad. They need peace, dignity, opportunity and a future free from terrorism.
Pakistan should focus on preventing terrorism and addressing the grievances of its own people instead of repeatedly attempting to internationalise Kashmir. Türkiye should respect India's sovereignty and recognise that statements at international forums do not speak for the aspirations of all Kashmiris.
Voice for Peace and Justice's message
Voice for Peace and Justice strongly condemns terrorism, extremism, radicalisation and propaganda aimed at disturbing peace in Jammu & Kashmir. We reject attempts to misrepresent the aspirations of Kashmir's youth or speak on their behalf without listening to them.
The people of Jammu & Kashmir should not be treated as a geopolitical slogan. Their aspirations are visible in their pursuit of education, sports, entrepreneurship, tourism, employment and peaceful development.
No speech at the United Nations can erase the lived experiences and aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir.
The message is clear: Kashmir needs peace, development and opportunity—not Pakistan sponsered terrorism, propaganda or external interference.
If Türkiye genuinely wants to contribute to peace in South Asia, it should encourage an end to terrorism, support development and listen to the grievances of people across the region—including those living in Pakistan-controlled areas.
