Invasion: Armies of Men, Angels, or Locusts. By Albert Porter
Mystery Babylon Falls: If you’ve never gotten deep into the actual events of the Tribulation, you must be somewhat shocked. I’m researching and updating my notes for the third or fourth time and still feel my stomach churning and keep thinking of those people I know, and some I love, that will be left behind. Try to picture an unbelieving family member or good friend and try to imagine how they will survive and what choices they will make. And if your faith falters, please remember all the prophecies that miraculously came true and look at all the prophecies that are being revealed by what is here in this world in 2026 as compared to 2000 or more years before. One is the two prophets who lie dead for several days, and the whole world watches. How could the whole world watch? The world couldn’t even watch until 1939 when TV was invented, yet very few owned one; however, a high percentage of the world can watch in 2026. How could John see an army of 200 million from the Far East when there were about 150-200 million total population in the world at the time he wrote the Book of Revelation?
We left off in the last article with the weather conditions getting worse and the earth now being hit by hailstorms, and they are not sure whether it is the large hailstones or pieces of asteroids or something else, but something terrifying is falling from the sky.
There is also some really catastrophic new event that has taken place because we see mountains and islands disappearing on earth, and the earth is being literally shaken (Rev 6:12-14). One thing that can cause islands and mountains to move and disappear is a large shift in the earth’s plates. This would certainly cause a huge earthquake. That may be what we see happening in Rev 6:12-14. We see that people all over the earth don’t feel safe even in their homes and buildings, and they seek to hide in caves and places under the earth. Two things seem to be going on here: something quite large is falling from the skies, and their homes and buildings may be shaking to pieces. The world is being terrorized, and people do not know where to hide.
There are several candidates for what may be causing the horrible judgments on earth, including:
A galactic super wave or a gamma ray burst that hits Earth. These are postulated events that would originate in some very distant part of the universe and which would be unpredictable. Either one might be able to wipe out all life on Earth almost instantly.
There may be a huge magnetic storm on the sun or some other event involving the sun. Again, these are unpredictable and could happen at any time with very little warning.
There may be a sudden switching of the Earth’s magnetic poles. There may be an eruption of a super-volcano. Again, the geological record tells us that the Earth has suffered these in the distant past. There is one in Yellowstone Park that could erupt quite suddenly with dire consequences.
Another large space body may hit Earth. The Earth has been hit by asteroids many times in the past. These may be anywhere in size from a few yards to many miles in diameter. Some combination of the above mechanisms or some other unknown super force may be involved.
While this terrible event is taking place another unique and terrifying event is also taking place in the sixth judgment; an invasion by an army of either men or angels (the 200 million troop army of Rev 9:16), who end up killing one third of the people on earth, (Rev 9:15). We first encountered this strange army in the fifth judgment, (Rev 9:1-12). They are described as an army of locusts. We see something like them again in Rev 9:13-21. Here they could be an army of angels (their king was an angel, Rev 9:11) or an army of men (Israel’s army was called God’s army in 2 Sam 1:12). They could be good or evil angels, redeemed or unredeemed men, since God uses all of these at various times to bring about his purposes. They are like a huge plague of locusts because they consume the earth.
Both Joel 2 and Revelation 9 seem to present descriptions of armies of angels. The army in Joel 2 is said to be the army of God, while the armies in Rev 9 seem to be armies of evil angels. Even so, Joel 2 seems to be a pattern for the events of Rev 9, and that is the way I present it below.
God could be keeping the promise that he made many times in the Old Testament as he supernaturally attacks the countries that have attacked Israel in the past, and they are now being burned up with fire (Rev 9:17-18). One third of mankind is killed in this judgment (Rev 9:18). The large and mighty army that comes is larger than any in the past or in the future (Joel 2:2, Rev 9:16). Fire is in front of and behind them; they have the appearance of horses and the sound of chariots.
Again, this seems to be figurative language for an army of angels. The horses are said to be able to leap over mountains; before them the earth shakes, the sky trembles, and the sun, moon, and stars are darkened (Joel 2:5-11). God’s horses are said to be spirit, not flesh, in Isa 31:3 and to be swifter than eagles in Jer 4:13. In Rev 9:7-11 the army of evil angels is also said to look like horses. The army of angels consumes everything in front of them. At the sight of them, nations are in anguish; every face turns pale. This army seems to be the army of 200 million of Rev 9:16 and 16:12, which comes from the east.
Sulfur came from the mouths of the horses in Rev 9:17-18, and sulfur was used to torment those who followed the antichrist in Rev14:9-11. Rev 14:14-20 makes it clear that it is angels who are executing the enemies of God in the sixth and seventh judgments. They swing their sickles and harvest those under the wrath of God (Rev 14:14-20). This is the day of the Lord, and it is dreadful (Joel 2:1-2). We are not sure whether or not the great earthquake and the invasion are interconnected events.
The fall of Babylon; Cyrus the Great defeating the Chaldean Wellcome
The antichrist’s hate of the worldwide religion, referred to as mystery Babylon, the great prostitute, has now grown to the point that the antichrist uses his military means to attempt to destroy the religion by destroying the country or countries of her origin, the place that houses her central leaders and holy sites (Rev 17:16-17). This country or countries was a great consumer of the world’s goods (Rev 18:11). Therefore, the merchants of the world are greatly dismayed as they observe the weapons of the antichrist’s empire being used to destroy her (Rev 18:9-11). This apparently is with nuclear weapons since the fire and smoke from her destruction are seen far away (Rev 18:17-18).
This destruction of Babylon is also recorded several times in Old Testament prophecy. In fact, Isa 47 very closely parallels Rev 18. This fall of Babylon the Great seems to occur within about one week of the Second Coming and the start of the seventh judgment. I conclude this from Rev 14:7-8 and Rev 18:2. It is obvious that the same event is being described since an angel in each case is proclaiming, Fallen, fallen is Babylon the Great.” In Rev 14:8 we see that “the hour of his judgment has come.” That seems to place it in the week before the seventh judgment begins. Likewise, Rev 19:1-6 places the fall of Babylon the Great right near the end of the tribulation.
The end is coming soon. Watch for the Second Coming and Armaggeddon in the next article.
