Concern of international organizations on the rights of Pakistani minorities. By Dr.Emanuel Adil Ghouri
In the developed countries of the world, the distribution of rights is not based on race, color, religion, minority or majority, the respect is based on humanity. But still there is a clear difference between the rights of the minority and the majority in Pakistan.
Pakistan's minorities, especially Christians, are deprived of many political, social and religious rights and many basic human rights violations are also on record.
They not only face the problem of forced marriage and conversion of young Christian girls but also the problem of physical violence and extrajudicial killings due to misuse of the blasphemy law.
Instead of taking practical steps to protect them, the government is denying the existence of the problem.A few months ago, the leader of religious affairs of the government, Chairman Ulama Council of Pakistan Allama Tahir Ashrafi said in a media statement that there was no incident of forced marriage and religious conversion in Pakistan
According to reports compiled by the Catholic News Agency and other NGOs, the number of cases of forced marriage and conversion is more than 1,000 per year.As a journalist, I understand that this number is much more than 1000. These 1000 cases are those that happen in urban areas that come under the eyes of the police and the media, while these cases are more in the backward areas away from the city. are suppressed locally which do not enter the police and media records.
In the last two years, most of the incidents have taken place in the province of Punjab, but unfortunately, no specific steps have been taken by the selected Christian representatives of the Punjab Assembly to stop these incidents.I remember that in Sialkot, four Christians MPs reahead the DPO office at the same time to register an FIR of such an incident, but failed to register the FIR, neither the girl could be returned, but her parents. also had to leave the area due to pressuere of muslim family.
In this regard, due to the performance of Christian social organizations, with the efforts of more overseas Pakistanis, this problem has now become the center of attention of international organizations
In October 2024, the 42nd annual meeting of the International Human Rights Committee of the United Nations was held in Geneva, in which the situation of the rights of Pakistani minorities was described as very alarming. Dissatisfaction was also expressed on the performance of natiomal human rights comission of pakistan
On October 4, 2020, an American delegation met the provincial minister of Punjab, Ramesh Singh, regarding the situation of minority rights. The delegation included Deputy Assistant Secretary Jacobson, Consul General Hawkins, Laskowski, Nelson, Lakhan Paul and experts in political affairs
Similarly, EU Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Reena Kavinka met Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan on October 28, 2024 and emphasized on improving the rights of minorities..The beauty of the ambassador's meetings was that she did not limit herself to meeting government officials but also met with Christian religious leaders to know the status of minority rights
Voices about the rights of Pakistani Christians are now starting to rise around the world. On November 27, 2020, US Congressman Clay Higgins has issued a threatening letter to President Joe Biden. In which decisive action has been demanded against the persecution of Christians in Pakistan. In his letter, Higgins detailed the ongoing violations of human rights in Pakistan.
On December2- 2024On, the British Member of Parliament, Chairman of the All Parties Parliamentary Group, Mr. Jim Shannon, has drawn the attention of the British Parliament to the issue of the rights of Pakistani minorities through a resolution
Using strong words, he has demanded the British government to play its role to improve the situation
On December 4, 2024 the delegation of the European Union Institution Capital Authority, led by Sebastian Loren, met with Punjab Provincial Minister for Human Rights and Minority Affairs, Ramesh Singh Arora. In this meeting, they decided to work on joint projects to improve the economic condition of the minorities living in Punjab.
What is worrisome here is that the largest Christian minority living in Punjab has a population of about 2.6 million.Christian members of the Punjab Assembly were not included in any meeting related to the rights of minorities .
Then which are the minorities of Punjab whose rights are being protected and whose welfare plans are being made
