ACLU veteran Weisner asks Hilton to keep Dr King book in their rooms. By Ahmar Mustikhan

A seasoned activist of the American Civil LibertiesUnion, who started off fighting injustice while she was still in school, has thanked Hilton Worldwide for removing a KKK picture from the eighth floor of The Tutwiler in downtown Birmingham last month and requested it not to be shy on being woke for civil rights.
“I’m pleased to see the historic hotel chain, Hilton, taking the first step towards rectifying its racist past by removing the picture of Confederate generals, KKK founders, and senators from Mississippi, who were praised for ridding the South of social ‘menace of Negroes’ from the Birmingham, Alabama Hilton Hotel,” Jane Weisner of Amherst, Mass., informed the top management of the more than $40 billion hotel chain.
A huge picture of Confederate veterans on the eight floor of The Tutwiler had left this writer traumatized as he had gone their to pay homage to the Four Little Girls who were killed by the KKK— Confederate veterans had launched the KKK—, just four blocks away at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.
The terror picture also had KKK senators from Mississippi, who were credited by the Montgomery Advertiser for lynchings in the south to rid it of the “menace of negroes.” After this writer protested, it was taken down apparently on the instruction of Mark Weinstein, SVP and Chief Marketing Officer of the Hilton Worldwide.
The Tutwiler is right across from the Linn Park where an innocent under 20 year old youth Lewis Houston was lynched by a mob November 24, 1893. One of the last sentences of the innocent man was, “Jesus take me home.”
In those days, white newspapers would describe a lynching victim as a “ Black Demon.” As the legendary Ida B. Wells noted, “Those who commit the murders, write the reports.”
“Confronting America’s racist history is a task every American must embrace. It isn’t an easy one, especially when many Americans want to whitewash or even deny this history,” Weisner, a progressive Catholic and staunch Biden supporter said.
Weisner, who is a champion of Balochistan right to self determination and spouse of highly respected Jewish social sciences scholar, Professor Stephen G. Weisner, author of a seminal work, Embattled Editor: The Life of Samuel Bowels.
The KKK not only hated blacks, but also despised Jews and Catholics. Blacks and Jews had always been united in struggle; one of the closest comrades of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. was Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.
After Trump supported Charlottesville racial terrorism, the main owner of the Hilton Hotel, Stephen Schwarzman— the 54th richest man on earth—, who was on the former president’s business council complained that people were calling him Nazi. Later, he was accused of backing the overthrow of the U.S. government in the wake of the 2020 elections as he had given millions of dollars to GOP election result deniers, including his favorite Kelly Loefler.
Schwarzman is aware of the KKK picture at the Hilton hotel in Birmingham and so is his heir apparent and fellow billionaire, Jonathan Gray. Gray was one of the hopefuls among Trump’s treasury secretary list. According to the Washington Post, Gray had hand selected Christopher Nassetta, the president and CEO of Hilton Worldwide.
“Only through educating ourselves can we learn the truth of how America was built on the back of slaves. America’s great wealth was ensured first through slavery, then the continued exploitation and oppression of people of color,” Weisner said, emphasizing, “Jim Crow laws guaranteed the second class status of black citizens throughout the South.”
When asked if she was a feminist, Weisner recalled that her fights with the Catholic Church over a woman’s involvement in the church leadership were “long and hard,” adding she started her activist life by fighting to take wood-shop instead of home economics in junior High school.
Weisner in her appeal to the leaders of Hilton Worldwide said the hotel chain could help educate Americans by placing Why We Cant Wait by Dr Martin Luther King Jr. in each hotel room in the U.S.
“Yes, this action may be met with some criticism, it maybe even called ‘woke,’ but to be woke is to be aware, informed educated all positive attributes. Attributes the Hilton Corporation, I would think, would want to be known as being,” she said.
She urged Hilton Worldwide to take this small action as a step in “a greater effort to ensure the education of Americans to our unfortunate racist history. Only through knowledge of our history can we prevent its continuation.”
Hilton Worldwide has 1.12 million rooms in 122 countries and rents out 200 million rooms every year. The books may not cost more than three million. It may help balm the bleeding wounds of blacks, majority of who are still in dire economic straits but still being targeted killed by racists.
Weisner said she was looking forward to learning about the steps the Hilton Worldwide is taking to turn a a new leaf “on its racist past and embraced a future that works to educate its customers.”
Earlier Maryland Delegate Joseline Pena-Melnyk, Jewish civil rights fighter and educationist Peter Geffen, UU community activist Joyce Dowling also wrote to the Hilton Worldwide bosses to take remedial measures.
Hilton founder Conrad N. Hilton was a close friend of Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had a terrible record on civil rights. He and his successor son, Baron Hilton, also idolized Nazi criminal scientist Wernher von Braun, who sent American whites to the moon and have honored him at the Smithsonian in Washington DC.
Meanwhile, Kay French, general manager of Hilton’s The Tutwiler in Downtown Birmingham, said she was trying her best to contact the BCRI.
“We have made several attempts to meet with the personnel at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) and will continue to reach out,” she said after a query from this writer.
Samantha Briggs, Education Director at the BCRI said, “We have scheduled a meeting with Hilton to view the picture in person and have been researching it ourselves as well, and reached out to another local (yet retired) archivist for consult.”
Dr Briggs immediate boss DeJuana L. Thompson, president and CEO of BCRI, commended the efforts of this writer.
“The consent you have received for the removal of the KKK image from the Tutwiler property is an incredible feat and both you and the Tutwiler are commended for swift action,” said Ms Thompson.
However, she requested, “We humbly ask you to discontinue using our name in your ongoing engagement with the Tutwiler as we are not a partner in your complaint (albeit we do applaud your swift advocacy on the issue.).”
In the past, BCRI came under flak for first announcing that they would honor one of the finest daughters of Birmingham, writer and activist Angela Davis with the Fred Shuttlesworth Award but then rescinding it. The BCRI finally gave the award to Angela Davis after an outcry of protest from the local community, including the “lion of Birmingham,” Mayor Randall Woodfin.
