Troubling Trend of Harassing Christians under Blasphemy in Pakistan. By Mushtaq Gill, Human Right Advocate

Troubling trend of harassing Christians emerged when the case FIR No.615/23 under charges of religious blasphemy was registered on 30-06-2023 against a Christian man namely Haroon Shahzad at Police Station Cant Sargodha city of Punjab. The Complainant is Muslim man namely Muhammad Imran Ullah son of Munawar Hussain resident of Chak No.49 North Sargodha. The complaint is about sharing the message on facebook about Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians taken from Testament 1 Corinthians 10:18-22.  It shocked many how to deal when someone gives reference from his own sacred text and it turned out to be used as a blasphemy against Muslim majority of the country.

An internet related tool that enables its users to post, share their thoughts, images, news, information, and documents etc. is known as social media. It might have bad effects but it does not cancel out the advantages provided through its usages. In this modern era, many Churches and preachers preach Gospel online using facebook and other social media. It is not being done only by Christian preachers but also the preachers of other religions do the same.

Faith is a spiritual conviction of human beings believing something, which doesn't need to be testified scientifically and mathematically. No faith is an inner skepticism of human beings which disbelieves something which can't be certified scientifically and mathematically. It is no right to be given to any person to harm, kill and dishonor any other person due to his religion or faith or no faith.  One is not wrong if he asks or gives the references from any religious book’s text or its sacred text’s instances as a criticism or for his own understanding. Almost every religious thought and belief has its own central texts to guide its followers.

Pakistan’s educational system and textbooks are repeatedly being subjected to international criticism for promoting a biased dealing, an intolerant behavior and discriminatory attitude towards religious minorities and implicitly ignoring theirs’ religious freedom. Pakistani students are being implanted from their early life towards a negative attitude which often resist change and factor into the disintegration of the social fabric of communities, and lead to discrimination, and even religious violence in the form misuse of blasphemy laws.

Majority of Pakistanis prey on religious minorities whenever there is an incident of blasphemy against Islam or Muslims. Persons of minority faiths, particularly Christian’s experience grave insecurity in Pakistan when someone is accused of blasphemous content or remarks. Pakistan’s blasphemy laws foster an environment of intolerance and impunity, and lead to violations of a broad range of human rights, including the obvious rights to freedom of expression and freedom of religion, as well as freedom from arbitrary arrest and detention; the right to due process and a fair trial; freedom from torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment; and the right to life and security of the person and property. In Pakistan people are killed, imprisoned, tortured, kidnapped, and otherwise victimized because of what they believe other than the majority believe. Christians are the most vulnerable portion of the Pakistani society because of their weak self-defense against the persecution at both national and international forums and particularly because of their population ratio and poverty.

We must have to embrace all human beings regardless of their religion, faith or conscience and also regardless of what their sacred text teaches them, who are truly tolerable, manageable and acknowledge the wrongs and faults in their religion, and are striving for coexistence, peace, love, harmony, equality, justice, rule of law, human rights, and freedom of religion and expression.
