Memories of Daddy: By Karen Duffy

A young woman from Pataskala, recently shared some wonderful memories of her father with me. The following memoirs are delightful to read and describe an enchanting relationship between father and child.
Father was a good listener; always took the time to listen and understand what was on my mind. He was compassionate, sensitive, generous and loving. Sometimes he would praise me just for being me and every day was a good day when he was around. I felt loved and cherished for being the innocent child that I was and dad always made me feel like a star. Dad said I was his special child and not to tell this to my siblings. Perhaps he told them they were his special children too. I’m not sure but I wouldn’t be surprised. Dad had a way of making me feel like the most wonderful child in the world.
Daddy taught me to be compassionate and to feel empathy for all people who are less fortunate than me. I learned to be strong, never give up and that if I put my mind to it, I can do anything. He taught me to love God, took us to church every Sunday and I learned that through faith and prayer, all things are possible.
I was encouraged and praised for doing good things and if I did something bad I was punished and forgiven quickly. Punishment was usually a slap on the wrist compared to what most of friends got but I didn’t complain about that.
Remembering long walks and holding hands, dad and I walked to Carson’s Field through a maze of pathways we called (The Poppy Field). Pretending we were in the Land of Oz, I was Dorothy and dad was the cowardly lion. Swapping characters, we spent afternoons in the poison poppy field, where my imagination soared and red poison sumac danced to the sway of my thoughts.
Did you know that we are called and invited to have a relationship with our Father in heaven? Jesus Christ taught his disciples to pray the Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11:1) and to approach God as Father. This prayer invites all of God’s children, you and me, to draw near to Almighty God. When we call God “Father,” we acknowledge our relationship to Him as a child approaches a loving parent.
Children depend on parents to supply every need. Likewise, we depend on God to provide all of our needs to live; physical, emotional and spiritual. Praying The Lord’s Prayer gives us an opportunity to praise God for His faithfulness to keep us safe when we are tempted, to deliver us from evil, for the assurance of eternal life and for every blessing He bestows upon us.
You are a child of God (John 1:12-13) and He loves you so much! We have assurance of eternal life through faith in His Son Jesus who gives us the Gift of the Holy Spirit, who is our Comforter. Like a parent loves a child, nothing will ever separate you from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Where do you find true love and acceptance? The truth is that many of us try to fill the void in our lives with ungodly things. We know what those things are and so does God. The Good News is that God wants to have a personal relationship with you right now, wherever you are in life!
God wants to fill that void in your life and He gives you freewill to love and obey Him. It is an easy choice to follow God but often, it is hard to obey Him because our sin separates us from our creator.
Know that today can be the beginning of a new life as a child of God. I urge you to reaffirm your Father/Child relationship. The prayer that Jesus taught us to pray will help you do this.
