Christian Divorce Act in Pakistan. By Bishop Dr. FS Bhatti
Divorce and remarriage’s topic is complicated topic in the Holy Bible. How much questions gives birth in this connection? It is not possible to answer all questions. It is spiritual growth and beneficial to study about comprehensive salvation what the Holy Bible teaches us.
The Holy Bible is complete way of life for human. It is complete principles for daily life. Who said that there is no divorce in Christianity, he must read the Holy Bible carefully with wisdom of God, he must ask from God for wisdom. The Holy Bible has two Testaments. Both Testaments completes name of “The Holy Bible”. Both Testaments have their own names as (OT and NT).
The definition of the word “Unfaithful”, Unfaithful is not only unbelievers of Christ but also who had no concern with His Holy God the Father’s will, they are not faithful with God’s word “The Holy Bible”, who has no harmony with God the Father to obey, they are unfaithful. Who did not act upon His commandment of God? Who walks against the Holy words of God? (1- Cor 7: 15).
In fact, God’ will was not for human to divorce each other. This is His eternal will for human that one man and one woman solemnized in the Holy Covenant of marriage that will long forever until they both died on the earth ( Romans 7: 2 – 3 ). Lord Jesus Christ explained this point to Pharisees about God’s foundational teaching that had been appointed for human (Mathew 19: 4 – 6).
God the Father is fed up with divorce that is not according to the Words of God “The Holy Bible” (Malachi 2: 16). God hates divorce but he does not hate all kinds of divorce because He said for HIMSELF that I have divorced Israel (Jeremiah 3: 8). God said that Israel had become unfaithful nation. Why it was happened because they started to worship idles (Statues)
There was permission to divorce in Old Testament (Deuteronomy 24: 1 – 4). This portion is not only concerning about adulterous women or men because there was death punishment for adulterous (Deuteronomy 22: 22) but its concern was with dislikes and mutual disharmony with each other to divorce means.
Our Lord Jesus Christ forbids divorce also in New Testament for Christianity (Matthew 5: 31 – 32, 19: 9). But if someone of couple has been polluted with flesh adultery then divorce is possible (Mark 10: 11 – 12, Luke 16: 18).
There is explanation of difference that Saint Luke and Mark did copy of verses of each other about divorce matter. Although Divorce is not from God’s will, it is only permission to divorce in some conditions. When any life partner did or does unfaithful action against fellow life partner according to His Holy Words, in that way, Lord Jesus Christ gives permission to divorce not commandment. But it is also written in 10 Commandment, don’t do adultery. Jesus Christ said that I did not come to condemn Law but to fulfill.
Some Bible scholars say on bases of letter of Apostle Paul (1 – Cor 7: 15). Divorce is acceptable when unfaithful wants to depart from faithful person. Apostle Paul explains that nobody is bound to be attached with each other but they can divorce. They are free to divorce each other. If faithful can not live with unfaithful, they depart from each other. God the Father wants to keep us in peace not unrest and daily disputes or disharmony. That is why; Faithful can divorce in this condition when fellow partner commits adultery as it is written in Matthew Chapter 5 and 19.
This discussion has been carried out among faithful scholars that New Testament permits divorce but it does not emphasize for remarriage. But this discussion has itself answer. Faithful who is not guilty, he/she can marry again. It is not prohibited in the Christianity to remarry.
Oh merciful Lord of Host, mercy on us to set us from bondage of darkness. Give all of us to do your will and good work according you Will for righteousness. Oh merciful God the Most, give wisdom to leaders who had become rebel from your glorious return to this world through your Son Jesus Christ. Oh merciful Lord of Host, mercy on me to set me free from darkness of world and bless me to reach lost and captives to set them free. In mighty name of Jesus Christ, Yeshua. In Jesus Holy Name. Amen.
