CWM : Church amongst Catholic workers. By Cajetan Peter D'Souza

Today there is an urgent need to organise the workers in the Catholic Church. We are familiar with associations, clubs, cooperatives, trade unions etc. organized for social, economic and cultural welfare of their membership. In Christian circles, traditional associations such as Confraternities, Solidarities and other pastoral associations have been organized, basically for the spiritual welfare of their members and also to offer their services to the work of the clergy for teaching of Catechism, spiritual renewal of the community in parishes and in area communities, raising of finances, organizing charitable work, celebration of festivals etc but there are few organisations that looks into the formation of workers.
There is a need for parishes within the Catholic Church within the Archdiocese of Bombay to include the formation of workers in the mission of the parish. Today the working class society is undergoing a lot of stress and tension with the increasing numbers of BPOs/Call Centre which are changing the working class scenario in the country and there is a need for the parish to introduce formation of workers in their mission. The Christian Workers' Movement is one such Workers' Apostolate that is officially recognised by the Catholic Church that focusses on the spiritual formation of workers.
The Christian Workers' Movement is not just another organization of the church but a Movement that works even for the 92% of the unorganized workers of the country. It empowers them through rights and duties and deals not just with the social aspect but also in the spiritual growth of workers. Thus the Christian Workers' Movement is a "Christ-centered" Workers Apostolate that serves, educates and represents the values of Jesus Christ at our places of work, church and society. Christian Workers' Movement is conscious of participating in the Church's mission through actions and involvement in the World of Work in the neighborhoods, parishes, factories and offices. Thus the CHRISTIAN WORKERS' MOVEMENT is a lay movement of committed Catholic fully conscious of belonging to the Catholic Church and that they have a special role to play in the Church. They are present and active in the world always on an onward journey. The Christian Workers' Movement conducts and organizes programmes, seminars and projects on Workers' Causes and other social issues.
The Christian Workers' Movement meets once a month on the parish level to discover God's plan for them at their places of work, church & society. In these meetings, they discover, explain and understand the situations workers live in, reflect on them and search for values that will guide them in action. The Christian Workers' Movement invites all Catholic workers, professionals, business people, self-employed people, housewives, and other Catholics including the retired and those taken VRS/CRS to enroll themselves as members.
