Vandalism in Karachi Catholic Church. PCP. Report.

KARACHI: May 30. Vandals broke into a small church just outside the precincts of the Karachi archdiocese and stole the tabernacle chalices and smashed the church furniture, a diocesan official said Thursday.

The attack took place two weeks ago at St Monica's church in the large informal settlement of Bhittaibad. The identity of the attackers could not be ascertained, nor could their motive. But the attack has left the Christian community of Bhittaiabad in shock. The archdiocese of Karachi held a special service on May 29 at St Patrick's Cathedral to pray for the early recovery of the stolen items. An appeal to this effect had earlier been made by the parish priest of St Monica. This week clergymen and volunteers visited St. Monica's church and offered their sympathies to the parishioners over the incident of vandalism. The visitors expressed solidarity with the parishioners and promised to take up the case at a higher level.
