KARACHI: A leading Christian aid group has allocated a sum of 45,000 rupees this Christmas for the heirs of the slain Idara-e-Amn-o-Insaaf workers. Church World Service made the allocation in response to an appeal launched this week by the Crisis Man

Three months have passed since unidentified gunmen burst into the offices of the Idara and shot dead seven of its workers. But neither the government nor any church group has offered compensation to the heirs of the Idara staff, all of whom were male and sole breadwinners of their families. In recent weeks the committee found it becoming a target of criticism, for allegedly failing to secure financial aid from either the government or private charity groups. It was also criticized for not pressuring the police to reopen the Idara offices, which have been closed for the past three months. A CWS official who requested anonymity said the aid group would provide 5,000 rupees to the families of the seven deceased men. CWS has already disbursed the money among the victims' families in the presence of the members of the Crisis Management Committee, according to the official. "We have apologized to them for such a paltry sum and told them it was more of a Christmas gift," he said. For the past few months the Crisis Management Committee, headed by Fr Peter John, has made arrangements for the security of the two survivors of the Sept. 25 attack.
