Vatican City: January 26, 2016. (CNS) Pope Francis has met with Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani during a private audience at the Vatican.
The men met for 40 minutes and at the conclusion of the meeting Pope Francis said, “I thank you very much for this visit. I have high hopes in peace”, according to Catholic News Service.
In response, President Rouhani asked the Ponitff to pray for him, said it was a pleasure to meet him and wished him good luck with his work.
The Iranian president gave the Pope a book of reproductions by painter Mahmoud Farshchian and a rug handmade in Shi’ite holy city, Qom.
The meeting was the first between a pontiff and an Iranian head of state since 1999.
