Pakistani Christian protest on Minority Day

Karachi: August 12, 2012. (PCP) The Pakistani Christians staged protests in every city of Pakistan against “National Minority Day” announced by government in 2010.

The Christian youth gathered in front of Press Clubs with banners “Give us rights as promised by founder of Pakistan” “Christians are not safe in Pakistan” “ Stop enforced conversion of Christian women” “Stop victimization under blasphemy law” “End terrorism of Islamists in Christian colonies” and “We want right to elect our representatives” There were also rallies in Sukker, Multan and Faisalabad by Christian’s parties who support government and its policies of selection system instead of election but their presence on this day was not significant or in large numbers compared to those condemning government of Pakistan and “National Minority Day” There was another development in Lahore where Christian gathered under banner of a low profile Christian political party to honor Altaf Hussain with award of “Ambassador of Minorities”. Mr. Altaf Hussain is Chief of mainstream Muslim political party MQM which sings a song to term Christians, Hindus and other religious parties as “Non-Muslims” instead of “Minorities” like ruling PPP. The presence of Bishops on stage with MQM leaders presented it as venue of Church of Pakistan rather than Christian political group. The protests in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and other major cities were enough to remind government of Pakistan that Christians are not satisfied with policies of government of Pakistan and outcome of 18th Amendment which claimed restoring rights to people of Pakistan and with “National Minority Day” celebrations to minorities in Pakistan.
