RAWALPINDI.July 3,2001: The sacrifices of James Masih and Nawaz Masih, who laid down their lives against nationalization of missionary schools in 1972 in Rawal Panda turned to be fruit full when Punjab government denationalized some schools in this d

According to the sources, the education officials handed over Government Saint Theresa Girls High School, Murree Road, Saint Patrick Boys High School, Murree Road, Saint Catherine High School, Lalkurti, and Saint Joseph Middle School, Lalkurti, to the woman from Ireland last year. The sources said that an underhand deal for the transfer of Government Christian Higher Secondary School, Raja Bazaar, was also in process and the school might be handed over to the woman during the summer vacations. The sources alleged that a former director education, Jamil Najam, had received gratification from the woman and persuaded the Punjab governor for the transfer of these schools to her. At present, there are about 68 nationalized schools, 30 high, 10 middle and 32 primary, in Rawalpindi. All these schools were nationalized in 1972. The buildings of all these schools are in dilapidated condition and the Punjab government is not paying any attention towards its renovation. Moreover, these schools are also facing shortage of teachers as no appointment has been made for the last eight years due to the ban on recruitment. Bishop Anthony Lobo, when contacted for his comments, said the Punjab government last year denationalized these four schools, which were nationalized along with 68 other schools in 1972, under an "agreement". He further said that under the agreement, these schools would not be converted into any commercial enterprises.
