Both were arrested and jailed more than two years ago for allegedly setting fire to a copy of the Koran, or Islamic Holy book.Amjad and Asif Masih were sentenced in Sessions Court in Jhang, March 20th, 2001.Both men suspected the Sessions Court judge was under Pressure from radical Muslims to hand down the maximum sentence possible under law. On March 19th, the attorney for Amjad and Masih argued that the men had been falsely accused of burning a Koran. He presented the judge with an undamaged Koran and claimed that it was the book the two had been accused of burning; the judge admitted that the book appeared undamaged after he examined it.
