Reserved seats for minorities urged

KARACHI, March 3: The Pakistan Muslim League (QA) has demanded provision of reserved minority seats in both houses of the parliament simultaneously with the right for the minorities to participate in the polls under the joint electorate system.

Leaders of the party at a press briefing here on Sunday expressed reservations on the ongoing constitutional amendments and sought involvement of all political parties in the process. The party leaders, including its chief Mian Azhar, Ejazul Haq, Haleem Siddiqui, Sardar Ghaus Baksh Mahar, Liaquat Ali Jatoi, Aleem Adil Sheikh, Naseer Khan Jatoi, Sahibzada Munir Khan, and Nilofer Bakhtiar were present on the occasion. With reference to their recent visit to interior of Sindh, Mian Azhar said it provided an opportunity to have a direct interaction with the people of the province. "Besides getting a feedback from the masses we were able to identify potential candidates for our party," he added. The visit was undertaken by Mian Azhar, Fakhar Imam, Gohar Ayub, Humayun Akhter, Majid Malik, Ejazul Haq and others. Talking to journalists, Ejazul Haq announced to contest election against Benazir Bhutto in the latter's home constituency, Larkana, during the forthcoming general elections. He said the people of Sindh were mature enough to distinguish between those committed towards the cause of the nation and those who played with the sentiments of the masses. He said despite attempts to cause trouble by mischievous elements during the recent tour of Larkana, the party leaders were extended a warm welcome during a public meeting at Pakistan Chowk in Larkana city. Ejazul Haq, however, clarified that a final decision in this regard rested with the executive committee of his party. But he would be personally desirous to challenge Benazir in her home constituency, provided she returns to the country and takes part in the scheduled elections.-APP
