Women Empowerment

By : SP John

Dear Sir, Women empowerment, women emancipation and gender equality are terms rhetorically being used in the media, in agendas and policies of government and NGOs sectors. Many organizations working for women issues have highlighted the problems of women and sincerely striving to achieve these goals but the efforts seems to be too till at the face of increased incidents of domestic violence, torture, discrimination and victimization that come across us. like suicide committed by girls, woman raped, sexually harassment, domestic violence, victimization and many such incidences certainly compels to rethink over the efforts being made particularly for the amelioration of women. Why these girls take extreme actions and give away their own lives and under certain conditions take the life of others too? Are we doing enough to address the issue of women empowerment? According to the present statistics available, majority of girls in Pakistan are never enrolled into schools and those who are provided opportunity to get formal education, only very few make it to higher education as most of the girls drop out of school after getting secondary education or are married off. Among these unfortunate girls are those who just after finishing higher secondary schools step out of their houses to look for jobs to become a helping hand for their poverty stricken families. Sadly, Our male chauvinistic society look down upon them and take these girls as whores rather than employees. Ironically, girls who achieve higher education; their parents are usually too protective to let them go out into the field or allow them to work. Hence, they too stay at home or seek jobs among their family circles for the sake of protection and security. It is a wide phenomenon that employers only seek the services of young girls and the jobs available in the market for these girls are that of secretaries, waitress, receptionist, offices of Public relations and teachers etc; Where these low paid girls are further subjected to discrimination and victimization as result of which many girls leave their jobs and prefer to stay home at the mercy of their families. Some of these girls once again pursue higher education to continue their education but by the time they finish their higher educations and achieve the sense of self determination and independence they reach to the age of 30s’, an age limit at which they are neither able to get good jobs in the market nor in the government sectors. Sexual abuse at work places, public places and even at places where women consider themselves to be protected has made them more vulnerable then ever and adversely affected the efforts to empower women. A U.N body dealing with women rights put forward an International treaty to eliminate gender discrimination; interestingly of 161 countries ratifying the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, about 44 have said they will not implement certain provisions of the treaty on political, constitutional, cultural or religious grounds. Pakistan itself is a signatory to U.N Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The government of Pakistan in collaboration with NGOs that are already working for women empowerment needs to re-evaluate their strategy and make new plans in accordance with diverse situation of women as a disadvantaged group in Pakistan. Measures ought to be taken to extend special assistance and awareness to women in extreme poverty, destitute women living in difficult circumstances particularly in rural areas where women have least chances to excel. All forms of violence against women be it physical or mental at domestic or social level must be dealt effectively with the view to reduce, if not to eliminate the incidences. The environment at work places also needs to be checked and made safer for women and counseling teams should be available to help victim women. The history of woman is the history of the continued and universal oppression of one sex by the other. The emancipation of woman is her restoration to equal rights and privileges with man. It is always true that No one is more arrogant towards women, more aggressive and scornful, than the man who is anxious about his virility. SP. John Rawalpindi
