Dear Editor, In yet another shameful incident, a church was torched by a mob in Sialkot on Friday, September 11. This is the fourth such attack against Christians in Punjab, and one that should be angrily condemned by all segments of society. Again, like the other incidents, this was reportedly sparked off by a non-incident, where there was no proof that the Holy Quran was actually desecrated. And like the previous incidents, this gave an excuse for the violent, bigoted and hateful elements of that town to gang up against the Christian minority, destroy their place of worship and attack Christians. When the Christians tried to peacefully protest and demand an end to this violence, according to reports, the police turned on them instead of the culprits! This is a shocking state of affairs and the frequency of hate crimes against minorities in Pakistan should alarm everyone. Instead of announcing compensations and instead of sloganeering, the government should actually ensure that the law enforcement agencies, especially the police, protect everyone regardless of their religious affiliation. What we have seen happen is that the police gets scared of the mob, especially if it is led by terrorist elements like the Sipah-e Sahaba, and that leads to the minorities becoming completely vulnerable to bigotry and violence. Nazia Tahir Karachi.
