“Growing Intolerance” a concern by S P John

By : S P John

‘Intolerance’ the term is defined as a lack of ability and willingness to tolerate something. A Phenomenon widely being seen in our Pakistani society; Be it politics, social life, religious affairs or any day to day activity, intolerance has taken deep roots. Suicidal bombings, agitations, angry arguments that some times lead to violence, and even death; recently been seen on the streets and even in the parliament are some of the forms of intolerance that have gripped Pakistan. Such is the grave and gross example of intolerance, the heinous killing of a Hindu, Jagdesh, A factory worker who was beaten to death by his co-workers in Korangi area on Tuesday after he allegedly uttered derogatory words against Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Whose body was later taken onto the road by the workers who killed him to publicly protest against his alleged blasphemous act. They were joined by some unruly elements who tried to set the corpse on fire. Isn’t it an irony that a man from minority knows the consequences of blasphemy, utters it in front of Muslim colleges, who later acted and pretending to be God, punished him with death? Isn’t it the mockery of the law, that the killers openly took the corpse on the road, joined by hard-line elements who tried to burn it and police did not arrest the killers?. We all know that it is the obligation of the state to protect and safeguard the life of its citizens and provide an environment where the rule of law is equal for all. However, whenever in the past the cases of blasphemy were initiated, the victims were only those from minority community and who falsely alleged them for blasphemy or killed them where always free to roam around and were above law, never tried before law for killing an innocent man or for placing false accusation on an honorable citizen. Over the past years it has been proven that the blasphemy law has always been misused by the miscreants or extremist elements against the minorities to settle personal scores. Majority of people alleged for blasphemy are from minority communities still languishing in jails without trial or are killed without proven guilty. Those who are set free by the court after proven innocent continue live in fear for rest of their lives. Islam is religion of peace and forgiveness. The life of Holy Prophet (PBUH) is full of examples where he showed mercy upon others. Being the student of Islamiate I understand Islam as in the words of Holy Quran "Hasten towards forgiveness from your Lord, and for a garden whose width is that of Heavens and Earth, prepared for the righteous. Those who spend in prosperity and in adversity; those who restrain anger, and pardon people; Allah loves those who are benevolent. (Surat A1-Imran, III, verses 133-135). Being a Christian I learned of forgiveness in Holy Bible as: Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. - Luke 23:34a Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: - Luke 6:37 Are these people who kill in the name of God, really the followers of Islam? Are they really practicing what Islam has taught to all of us? S. P. John Rawalpindi
