Time to act wisely... By David Khan

For a long time the Church of Pakistan is going through a crisis. There are countless people who are responsible for this situation. It is very clear that the reasons of the present crisis are the vested interests of the leadership in order to usurp the resources lying at their disposal the most valuable of which are the properties lying all over Pakistan and were left by the Western Churches as a trust to the Pakistani leadership. Unfortunately the Pakistani leadership in the last fifteen years has not stood up to the expectations except for a few God fearing persons. The laid down procedures of accountability have not been followed in order to avoid being trapped by the same rules later on. The very recent episode is of the sale of Saint Andrews Church, Karachi which has been given away at a peanuts consideration by the Attorneys of the Church of Scotland on the directions of the Bishop of Sialkot. These Attorneys are the appointees of the main Trust of the Church of Scotland and have clear instructions of not exercising outside the territorial jurisdictions of the Diocese of Sialkot. It is in black and white that the Trustees of the Church of Scotland took serious not of the misappropriation and even resolved to initiate criminal proceedings against the conduct of the Attorneys in Pakistan. It is sad and surprising to know that in spite of the resolutions of the Trust no action has been taken so far and it seems that the Church of Scotland has been stopped midway by some hidden hands. During this year the Bishops of Lahore and Sialkot have joined hands in spite of their differences which had reached to the point of enmity. The reason is that the Bishop of Lahore (Alexander Malik) who himself has illegally sold the properties of LDTA all over Pakistan needs his own defense. Since he is the blue eyed boy of the Church of England and the rest of the partners, has been able to persuade the Western lobby even to the extent of the Archbishop to stop process of accountability by the Church of Scotland. The Church of Scotland has kindly obliged. This plunges the Church of Pakistan into further depths of crisis as it means more litigation. I wonder who gets the benefit of this delay. Has anybody the answer? Please enlighten us. David Khan Member Diocese of Karachi Church of Pakistan
