Bishop Sadiq Daniel... By Y.K. Bangash

By :

Goodday! I am writing concerning the great debate over the issue of the Bishop of Karachi. I must say that I am ashamed and appalled that there are such Christians present in Pakistan, especially clergy, who have dragged this issue in the civil courts. Let me remind those people of a few things. Firstly, that the Church of Pakistan, even though it is a united church is mainly Anglican in heritage-that is the reality, and if you are going to dispute it, then you are living in oblivion. Secondly, as per Anglican ( i.e. Catholic) tradition the civil courts should not be allowed to interfere in the matters of the Church. Remember St. Thomas Becket? Why did he get martyred? Because he protested against the King interfering in the matters of the Church. My question for all those people who have dragged this matter into the courts: How do you think the Sindh High Court is going to judge in this case? Is the Sindh High Court an ecclesiastical court? No! So even sending the case there is a te! stament to the bad faith of the persons involved in the issue. Truly, shame on you! Further, a Bishop is known by two things. First is valid ordination by a valid Bishop, and second is recognition by the Primate See. I do not know about either of these cases with reference to Rev. Ijaz, but am sure that Bishop Daniel fulfills both these requirements. He is in Communion with Canterbury, and is recognized by most, including the Primate, of the Church of Pakistan. Now, you may have problems with Bishop Malik, and they might be valid, but it is a fact that Lahore is the most important diocese and as such even if its bishop is not the moderator its view is important and decisive. Now, to all those people who will scream and howl at this: The simple reason that you are doing this is that you do not agree with the Anglican heritage of the Church of Pakistan. If you do not, then please reconsider your participation in this church. Mixing Anglican theology with protestant ones was and is never a good idea and I think that it is leading to problems. Just see what the two clergy who are against Bishop Daniel signed themselves as, "Presbyter"---the Presbyterian name for clergy, not Fr. or Rev. or Canon, as in the Anglican way. There is too much difference in understanding between the two theologies and I exhort those who have a problem with Bishop Daniel to recognize that they actually have a problem with the Anglican heritage of the Church and the See of Canterbury which recognizes him, not Rev. Ijaz, as the rightful bishop of Karachi. Pax vobiscum. Nawabzada Yaqoob K Bangash
