Minorities in India... by Pritam K. Rohila

By :

A recent report by Harsh Mander (Dark Clouds Without Silver Linings,The Hindustan Times, India, 23 February, 2004) describes horrible crimes being committed against tribal converts to Christianity in the Bhil heartland of Western Madhya Pradesh. Contrary to the image being projected in the government-paid full-page ads every day in several English and vernacular newspapers, dark clouds hover over "India Shining" image being projected in them. There is still considerable homelessness, hunger, illiteracy, and illness. But most of all there is increasing insecurity among minorities. Government-patronized individuals and groups are targeting Muslims and Christians. Since supporters of the perpetrators now occupy important courts and police positions, their crimes against minorities often go unpunished. Even worse is the prospect of an overwhelming victory in the forthcoming federal and state elections, especially in view of the lack of a strong, organized and united opposition. That things are not much better among some of India's neighbors, provide no comfort to the poor victims! What can (and should) you and I do is a question that deserves some serious thinking by each one of us. Pritam K. Rohila, Ph.D
