Dear Mr. Nazir Bhatti, Greetings from Pakistan. I hope you received my reply on subject a few weeks ago. I fully agree with your idea of having a Christian Daily Newspaper that should be published from Pakistan. There are so many issues and problems for Pakistani Christians, yet they are not highlighted by our national press. We have a daily newspaper from Quetta Balochistan "The Daily Aftab". But they have to send it to other provinces free of cost. We could have more newspapers in Pakistan but our main problems are (1) We the Pakistani people including Christians are not in a habit of paying for what we want to read. I give you my own example. The Monthly Kalam-E-Haq is sent to over one thousand people, only 10% pay the yearly subscription. In year 2003 so far our income is RS 10,700 Only. The minimum monthly expenditure is RS 9,000.00. We are in deficit all the time. We get so many letters from our readers who praise the magazine but never pay. I calculated that at we have at least 50 to 60 thousand readers in Pakistan alone. Yet they re not willing to pay RS 16.33 per month. You might have experienced in Pakistan while traveling in a bus that one or two people by the newspaper and the whole bus reads it. You might have not forgotten the "Bhai sahaib, can I see the newspaper"? (2) The Church leadership is least interested in a Christian daily. They have gained access in national newspapers therefore they really don't need a Christian Daily. The magazines that are published have to beg for advertisements from Big leaders. Magazines are started and closed, though if the mainline churches decide to have a Christian Daily, they can do it over night. (3) To start a Christian Daily Newspaper, we need a) government permission that should not be a problem. b) Own press with all modern equipment and system to monitor on Radio and Television what is going on around the world. c) Work very hard to get advertisements from church and the government agencies. This is the life line of any Daily Newspaper. d) News stand sales and hookers interest in taking responsibility of distributing the newspaper. These are the major problems that I have openly mentioned. I don't know how much will be the cost will it cost, I really don't know but it is going to cost a lot. I my self and the United Presbyterian Church will strive very hard to convince people to buy a Christian Daily. We can provide with news and views and we will donate what ever we can do.
