ISLAMABAD: December 30, 2008. Bishop of Rochester, Bishop Michael Nazir Ali expressed concerns about minority rights and death penalty on blasphemy laws in a meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari here today.
Bishop Michael Nazir praised services of Benazir Bhutto and conveyed his condolences on 1st death anniversary to President of Pakistan who is widower of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto.
Bishop reminded President that Benazir Bhutto promised to repeal blasphemy laws and protection of religious minorities in Pakistan.
The Bishop of Rochester, UK, Bishop Michael Nazir Ali was born in Karachi in 1949. His parents converted to Christianity from Islam and joined Catholic Church of Pakistan but Michael Nazir Ali left Catholic Church and converted to Anglican Church in 1970. Michael Nazir Ali was ordained priest of Church of Pakistan and became principal of Karachi Seminary run by Church of Pakistan. Archbishop Ernie Rudvin in newly formed dioceses of Raiwind in Punjab appointed him a bishop.
Bishop Michael Nazir Ali became a controversial person in Church of Pakistan on his direct contacts with Archbishop Robert Runcie, head of Anglican Church in based in UK. He was known as passing information’s to Headquarters of Anglican Church about scams and selling of properties by other bishops of Church of Pakistan.
Archbishop of Canterbury appointed him his assistant and he migrated to UK with his English wife and became bishop of Rochester.
