Faisalabad: Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) expresses deep concern and strong condemnation over the case of Maria Shahbaz, a 13-year-old Christi
Sargodha, Pakistan: December 18, 2008. (Jawad Mazhar reports for PCP) Scores of Christian residents of Maryam Town flocked up in front of District Police Officer (DPO) Dr. Usman Anwer’s office to protest against the violence allegedly inflicted on several Christian women, damaging and pilfering of household valuables by unidentified under cover policemen from at least two impoverished Christian homes here in the central Punjab’s city of Sargodha Pakistan on Dec 12th. PCP witnessed the protest rally.
Residents of the Christian slum ‘Maryam Town’ apprised PCP that on Dec 11th several cops dressed in plain clothes, whose exact number couldn’t be confirmed, arrived at Maryam Town in two official vehicles of Sargodha Police. Angry Christian residents of Maryam Town further said that the cops forced their way into at least two Christian residences and started wrecking domestic appliances and other valuables.
Poor Christian demonstrators alleged that cops dressed in common clothes also deprived the Christian families of their Cell Phones, a licensed gun and other household valuables.
To a query, protesters replied that policemen also inflicted severe torture on Christian women leaving them critically injured and absconded with their bags containing cash, jewelry and pricey cosmetics.
“Those ruthless policemen arrested and took with them an innocent Christian youth Imran Masih with out any allegations”, Christian protesters allegedly compliant to the PCP “to whom they released after getting a bribery of Pakistani Rupees 1000/- (US $ 12.82 approx)”.
Demonstrators also said that those wicked cops also thrashed Christian youths with truncheons in a barbarian way who protested against their terrorism and tried to stop them.
Before dispersing peacefully, Christians urged the DPO Dr. Usman Anwer to take immediate and stern action against the policemen involved in that atrocious act.
Talking to PCP, DPO Sargodha Dr. Usman Anwer condemned this sort of police terrorism and pledged to look into matter and bring the culprits to the book. At this occasion he issued directives to the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sargodha to probe into the matter in detail and report to him as soon as possible.
