Faisalabad: Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) expresses deep concern and strong condemnation over the case of Maria Shahbaz, a 13-year-old Christi
Faisalabad: September 25, 2008. (Khadijah Shah for PCP) The National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP, human rights body of Catholic Church) organised a seminar on the theme of 'Struggle for the Peace Building in the Context of Country Problems and Resolves' to mark International Peace Day at center for Peace and Harmony in Faisalabad.
120 people of different walks of life attended it. The purpose of the seminar was to talk about the peaceful resolve of increasing intolerance, extremism and prejudice in the society. The speaker included Nisar Barkat (Director NCJP), Khalid Rasheed Asi, Mian Riffat Qadri Advocate, Iftikhar Ahmad, Yousaf Bemjamin (coordinator Peace Education Program) and Shahid Anwar, while Emmanuel Yousaf (National Director NCJP) presided over the seminar.
The participants of the seminar approved an anonymous resolution, which stated that institutions of state should be allowed to function in accordance with the constitution and law. Moreover discrimination laws and discriminatory provisions in the constitution on the basis of religion, color, sect and ethnic should be emended inline with the norms of fundamental rights. They want a peaceful society free of extremism, internal, external, religious or military interference, so ongoing military operations in several areas of NWFP and Balochistan be stopped and conflicts be resolved peacefully through dialogues with tribes. Provincial Autonomy and implementation of constitution and judicial system in the tribal areas should be insured by introducing reforms in the constitution.
Government and private print and electronic media should avoid presenting discriminatory material and should play their role for the promotion of peace and tolerance.
Government should adopt peaceful mean to curb tendency of violence, extremism and wrong use of religion. Peace without justice is impossible therefore deposed judges must be reinstated. The material based on all kinds of bases, discrimination and hatred should be removed from curriculum and education system.
Moreover, syllabus should be made a source for the promotion of human rights, peace equality patriotism, temperance and social values, rather than for the advertising of a single faith.
The government should review previous foreign policy and should formulate concrete strategy for the betterment in the law and order situation of Pakistan through building friendly relations with neighboring countries.
