Restoring Dignity and Health: BACA Brings Water and Washroom Facilities to Jarawater, Sindh. Report by Juliet Chowdhry and Hannah Chowdhry
Pakistan: The Christian and Hindu community of Jarawater, Sindh, has gained access to clean water and safe sanitation facilities thanks to BACA. After women and children faced long, unsafe journeys to collect contaminated water and struggled for privacy in open fields, BACA installed a water pump and constructed a two-seat washroom. These interventions have restored safety, dignity, and health for the community.
In November last year, the British Asian Christian Association (BACA) installed a water pump for the Christian and Hindu community at Jarawater, Sindh, responding to a heartfelt request made through our volunteer, Evangelist Daniyal. The community had reached out after witnessing BACA’s transformative work in nearby areas, seeking immediate help to address their water and sanitation needs.
Evangelist Daniyal visited Jarawater and spoke with the families, who shared the daily hardships they endured. Women and children had to travel long distances through dense crops and shrubs to fetch water from an irrigation canal. The water was unsafe for drinking, causing recurring illnesses in the community. The journey was both exhausting and hazardous, especially for women traveling alone.
BACA acted promptly, installing a water pump that delivered clean, safe water directly to the community. This intervention not only improved health outcomes but also saved women and children from the daily burden of fetching water from distant and unsafe sources.
Following the water pump installation, the need for safe sanitation facilities became urgent. Women reported having to relieve themselves in the open fields, often facing harassment from crop owners and risks from insects and men. To restore their dignity, BACA began the construction of a two-seat washroom on 12th February 2026.
Juliet Chowdhry, Trustee of BACA, reflected on the significance of this project:
“Access to clean water and safe sanitation is not just a basic need—it is a matter of dignity, safety, and human rights. Seeing women and children finally relieved of these struggles fills us with hope. BACA is committed to transforming communities, one vital facility at a time.”
The community has expressed deep gratitude for the interventions. Jatno, an elderly woman, said:
“It was difficult and humiliating to go out in the open fields for our sanitation needs. We requested BACA for a washroom, and it has been built for us. I am deeply thankful to BACA.”
Preetam Masih explained:
“Before the washroom, our women faced danger and humiliation when going for their sanitation needs. Crop owners would chase them away, and it was a disgrace. We are thankful to BACA for coming to our aid, first with the water pump and now with a safe washroom. God bless BACA.”
Through the installation of the water pump and construction of the washroom, BACA has improved the lifestyle, health, and dignity of the Jarawater community, highlighting the life-changing impact of practical, timely interventions.
