In Defense of Christians Expresses Serious Concern Over the Ongoing Conflict in Lebanon and the Risk to the Christian Community

Washington, DC:  In Defense of Christians (IDC), America’s leading advocacy organization for Christians in the Middle East, expresses serious concern over the rapidly intensifying violence in Lebanon amid the expanding regional conflict involving Iran, Israel, and Hezbollah. The current escalation threatens Lebanon’s fragile stability and places additional strain on the country’s historic Christian community.

Lebanon is once again being drawn into a regional confrontation beyond the control of its government. In recent days, Hezbollah has launched rockets and drones into Israel in coordination with Iran-aligned forces, prompting large-scale Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon, including in Beirut and southern regions where Hezbollah maintains military infrastructure, causing serious damage and death to area Christian communities. Israeli forces have warned of further operations if attacks continue. The escalation comes as Lebanon remains in severe economic crisis, with weakened state institutions, political paralysis, and ongoing mass emigration.

The Lebanese government has publicly warned against dragging the country into the regional conflict and has stated that all military actions must fall under the authority of the state, restricting Hezbollah’s armed activities. Despite these statements, the government lacks the ability to fully control Hezbollah, leaving the country exposed to retaliation and internal instability.

Christian towns in southern Lebanon and mixed areas near the border with Israel have experienced displacement, economic disruption, and growing insecurity as hostilities intensify. Continued instability is accelerating emigration and further reducing the Christian presence in the country.

For more than a century, Lebanon has stood as one of the last places in the Middle East where Christians live as an integral part of national life rather than as a marginalized minority. Preserving Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability is essential to protecting religious diversity in the Middle East and safeguarding its historic Christian communities.

“Lebanon’s Christians are not a party to this conflict, yet they once again find themselves forced to the front lines, caught between regional powers and armed actors,” said IDC Executive Director Richard Ghazal. “The U.S. and the international community must act to prevent further escalation, strengthen Lebanon’s legitimate institutions, and ensure that Lebanon does not become another permanent battlefield in the Middle East.”

In Defense of Christians (IDC) is a Washington-based advocacy organization dedicated to defending Christians and religious minorities in the Middle East through policy advocacy, legislative engagement, and public awareness initiatives.
