Justice Delayed Is Justice Denied: LEAD Ministries Pakistan Commends Dawn News for Highlighting Judicial Accountability. Report by Sardar Mushtaq Gill
UMERKOT: In a significant and much-needed public address, Justice Salahuddin Panhwar of the Supreme Court of Pakistan openly criticised the deep-rooted flaws in the country’s judicial and institutional systems. Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of the Umerkot Bar Association, Justice Panhwar expressed regret over the rampant delays in justice and the role of dishonest officials—including judges, lawyers, and police officers—in perpetuating this failure.
Justice Panhwar, known for his integrity and forthright approach, cited real-life examples of extreme delays in justice, including an inheritance case that remained unresolved for 71 years and an accident case settled only after 24 years. "Justice delayed is justice denied," he reiterated, calling it not just a saying but a harsh reality that reflects the systemic failure of the judiciary.
He further condemned the undue influence wielded by feudal lords and bureaucrats, stating that some members of the judiciary compromise their responsibilities to serve the interests of the powerful—betraying public trust in the process.
In response to Dawn News’ timely reporting of the event, LEAD Ministries Pakistan has extended its appreciation to the outlet for highlighting the critical issue of delayed justice and holding institutions accountable. In a public statement, the organisation said:
"We commend Dawn News for shedding light on the courageous words of Justice Salahuddin Panhwar. It is essential that voices demanding accountability and reform in the judiciary are amplified. Justice should not be a privilege for the few but a guaranteed right for every citizen. We stand in solidarity with efforts to reform judicial systems and call upon all institutions to ensure timely and fair justice for all."
LEAD Ministries Pakistan, which advocates for human rights and social justice, has long been vocal about the urgent need to reform Pakistan’s legal and institutional structures. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to support transparency, judicial integrity, and equitable access to justice.
As the nation grapples with cases that often span generations, Justice Panhwar’s candid remarks and the platform provided by media outlets like Dawn represent a critical step toward meaningful reform. But as LEAD Ministries noted, words must be followed by actions—for justice delayed continues to be justice denied.
