Tragedy in Hafizabad: Poisoned Sweetmeats Kill Three Christian Children, Six Critically Ill. Report by Khalid Shahzad
Hafizabad, Punjab – A harrowing tragedy struck the Christian community in Hafizabad, Pakistan, as nine minor children fell victim to a suspected poisoning after consuming sweetmeats offered by an unidentified individual. The incident, which occurred just days before the start of Holy Week—a deeply significant time for Christians around the world—has sent shockwaves through the local Christian population and beyond.
According to reports, three children tragically lost their lives, while six others remain in critical condition at a local hospital. The victims, all from the Christian community, were reportedly approached by an unknown person who gave them sweetmeats. Shortly after consuming them, the children began showing signs of severe illness. Emergency medical services were called, but despite efforts, three children succumbed to the effects of the poisoning.
The deceased have been identified as members of impoverished Christian families, and the entire community is in mourning. The surviving children, who are battling for their lives, are said to be receiving intensive care.
One of the surviving children, Shahbaz Masih, son of Sarwar Masih, gave a statement to the police, recounting the incident and naming an unknown man as the individual who distributed the sweets. Based on his statement, a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under murder charges. Despite this, no arrests have been made so far, leading to growing frustration and concern among the community.
The Christian community in Hafizabad and across Pakistan has reacted with fear, grief, and anger. This tragedy, occurring at the onset of Holy Week—a time for prayer, reflection, and unity—has instead turned into a time of sorrow and apprehension. Many fear that the incident may not be a random act, but a targeted attack on a vulnerable religious minority.
Local leaders and human rights organizations have condemned the incident, calling for a swift and transparent investigation. They have urged the police and government authorities to act decisively to bring the perpetrator to justice and to ensure the safety and protection of minority communities in Pakistan.
Christians in Pakistan, who make up a small percentage of the population, have long faced discrimination, targeted violence, and social exclusion. This tragic event has once again highlighted the precarious position of minorities in certain parts of the country, and the urgent need for stronger protections and justice mechanisms.
As the families bury their children and pray for the recovery of the hospitalized victims, the Christian community in Hafizabad remains on edge—mourning not only the loss of young lives but also the continued threat to their safety and dignity.
Calls for Justice
Religious leaders and activists have appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Chief Minister of Punjab to take immediate action. Demands include:
A thorough and impartial investigation into the incident
Arrest and prosecution of the perpetrator(s)
Compensation for the families of the victims
Medical support for the surviving children
Enhanced security for minority communities during Holy Week and beyond
This incident is being seen as not just a criminal act, but a test of Pakistan’s commitment to protecting its minorities. For now, the community mourns, waits, and hopes for justice.
