Karachi: July 3, 2008. (Reported by Khadijah Shah) Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), from the Press release of Central Secretariat learned that the journalists in North Waziristan are receiving intimidations from a gang of unidentified persons. Receiving such bullying is dismayed and charged by CPNE. Khyber agency: Mangal Bagh, Lashkar-e- Islami's manager, while talking to the press club conference proclaimed, from past few years the correspondents are receiving threats and they are living in a dreadful condition. From the firing of indefinite persons, Hayatullah and many other collaborators were exterminated. There murderers are not incarcerated as no somber act was taken against them, no positive steps were taken by the law agencies against this illegitimate act. Many of the journalists after receiving such pressures left Waziristan and are destined to take refuge in Tang and Dera Ghazi Khan. CPNE dismayed with such threats, request the government to provide suitable fortification to the assets and life of the journalists who are working enthusiastically for a good cause. The important steps should be urgently taken by the government in this case. CPNE also spoke against the attack on a Press Club in Multan. Such occurrences have illustrated that the attacks are against the independence of journalists and the perceptions of the journalists. CPNE demanded for appropriate communication of journalists with government and private offices. They should aid the journalists to search out for underlying threats and to make such information public. Government and private offices should collaborate with them by permitting them the liberty to labor appropriately by eliminating the margins set on them. They are in severe need of autonomy as well as safeguard.
